History
The building housing the hotel is the birthplace of Gian Domenico Romagnosi, jurist, philosopher and physicist born in Salsomaggiore on 11 December 1761, one of the most important figures of nineteenth-century Italian legal thought. For its historical value the house was declared a National Monument by the law of 20 June 1909.
The extension and renovation works carried out during the twentieth century on the original architectural layout gradually gave the birthplace a hotel identity without erasing its historic features: the wooden beamed ceilings, the proportions of the rooms, the view over the square of the Terme.
Casa Romagnosi was a hotel that ran on discretion and privacy, appreciated by spa guests for its central position, which allowed them to walk to the Terme Berzieri and Terme Zoja establishments.
After a complete restoration, Albergo Casa Romagnosi was inaugurated in December 2005 with 39 rooms, the restaurant, the bar and the terrace. The project preserved the protected elements and brought air conditioning, Wi-Fi and new bathrooms to every room.
Today the hotel is a directly managed 4-star: the front desk knows guests by name, organises excursions and visits in the area on request and takes care of the small details, from breakfast in the room to bicycles for a ride along Viale Romagnosi.
Who was Gian Domenico Romagnosi
Romagnosi (Salsomaggiore, 1761 – Milan, 1835) was among the fathers of public law and legal philosophy in Italy. He taught in Parma, Pavia and Milan, wrote the Genesis of Criminal Law and the Introduction to the Study of Universal Public Law, and was the teacher of Carlo Cattaneo. Salsomaggiore dedicated its main avenue and a monument to him.
Staying at Casa Romagnosi means sleeping in the building where it all began: a plaque at the entrance recalls the jurist's birth, and the front desk is happy to tell the story of the house to anyone who wishes.
